The new activewear brands
It seems fitness clothing is everywhere these days, with lots of mainstream fashion brands adding performance-focused collections to their lines.
Cases in point: Reitmans introduced its Hyba label last fall, and this spring, Forever 21 joins the fitness club, too. The GapFit collection has been going strong in Gap stores since 2010, and this spring it is introducing revamped fits and new fabrics in its workout pants. Sister brand Active by Old Navy has been working it since 2011.
Other stores that may surprise you with the fact they have fitness wear include Express, Victoria’s Secret, Additionelle, Joe Fresh, Mark’s, Land’s End and Walmart’s Athletics Works line.
Pictured: Hyba by Reitmans jacket ($40) and sports bra ($24); Forever 21 Active sports bra ($18); GapFit pants ($65).

Can nail polish interfere with lifesaving efforts in the ER?
It might have, at one time; doctors in the ER would check the level of oxygen in a patient’s blood by pressing on their nails. If a purple hue appears in the nail bed, it means the person has low oxygen (or hypoxia), says Dr. Andrew Affleck, an ER doctor at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, Ont., and co-chair of public affairs and health policy leadership for the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. An oxygen measure helps evaluate whether a patient needs supplemental oxygen–crucial knowledge, since getting too little oxygen could kill you. If you’re wearing nail polish, it’s not possible to check this by looking at the nail bed.
But these days, ER doctors measure oxygen with a pulse oximeter. The machine’s clip-on device attaches to your fingertip or earlobe. With the device, nail polish shouldn’t pose a problem. Several studies done on the topic have concluded that most polish colours have little to no effect on the reading.
More research is needed to determine what effect, if any, acrylic and gel nails could have. But Affleck clarifies an important fact: “A pulse oximeter isn’t going to give a false high. If anything, it’ll read low and we’d give you oxygen. We’d err on the side of caution.”

Beauty Bites: Coty fragrance
If it’s spring, there must be new fragrances from Coty. But the name Coty goes far beyond fragrance: It is a giant cosmetics company with annual sales of more than $4 billion, started by a visionary more than 100 years ago. François Coty was from the French island of Corsica and studied perfumery in Grasse in southern France. His Chypre (circa 1917) is one of his most famous creations among vintage-perfume aficionados. He emphasized the beauty of the bottle, designing with Baccarat and Lalique, and is also credited with bringing affordable fragrance to the masses. The brand first became popular in the U.S. when servicemen came home from World War I with Coty fragrances for their wives. The company expanded into powders and other cosmetics, making François Coty the wealthiest man in France in 1926. He died in 1934 at age 60.
Through mergers and acquisitions in the past 10 years, Coty is now a global company of 10,000 employees. Headquartered in New York, it has a presence in more than 130 countries and territories, and more than 40 brands in its portfolio. They include Rimmel colour cosmetics; Sally Hansen and O.P.I nail care; and Philosophy skincare products. The company’s 37 fragrance brands include Calvin Klein, Chloé and Marc Jacobs.
Two spring launches (pictured): Rosabotanica Balenciaga is a spicy citrus rose scent ($100, 50 mL). Endless Euphoria Calvin Klein, a fruity/floral, “opens with an intoxicating breeze of cherry blossoms” ($49, 40 mL).
